Oaks, Quorum of the 12 Apostles. Critics’ Arguments Latter-day Saints are repeatedly encouraged to rely on a witness of the spirit i. Holy Ghost to personally authenticate the truthfulness of the origins and content of the Book of Mormon. Given constant encouragement from general and local leaders of reliance on supernatural manifestations a testimony over testable claims, it is not surprising that many faithful Latter-Day Saints seem unfazed by empirical evidence or the lack of it contradicting Book of Mormon claims, whether the research is conducted by Mormon or non-Mormon archaeologists and historians. Of even greater concern is that many faithful LDS members, by virtue of the admonition of their leaders mentioned above , are not even aware of the perplexing problems contained in the Book of Mormon text. As a result, they are usually unable to effectively dialogue with critics without resorting to faith-based claims in a testimony which carry no authoritative weight for the many dedicated experts in the fields of archaeology, history, linguistics, genetics, etc. This page details some problems that arise by accepting the Church-sanctioned teachings of the origin and content of the BOM as well as responses to those problems from the LDS Church, apologists and devout members. Anachronisms An anachronism is when writing contains something from a future time period which couldn’t realistically be in the time period they’ve written it into.

She had signed up for a free online dating service, and had recently gone out with four different guys. Yes, I have studied Mormonism since the early s, much longer than you have been alive!!! And I guarantee you are not going to like it. Many local LDS congregations host weekend dances and other social events to which their young people are encouraged to invite nonmember friends. Nonmembers often end up becoming attracted to the wholesome Latter-day Saints. Over the years we have counseled a number of young people who have become involved in relationships with Mormons of the opposite sex. Typically, these Christians are encouraged to participate in the missionary lessons and join the LDS Church if they hope to take their relationships to the next level.

In other words, they are pressured to convert to Mormonism. Christian researcher Sandra Tanner of Utah Lighthouse Ministry believes the problem is especially prevalent with those attending college.

He was raised as a Mormon, though he is a non-believer in any faith. We were married in the Church during a time when they had not fully decided on the validity of Mormon baptism. Since then, the Church has decided Mormon baptism is not valid.

I am taking the missionary discussions, and I really don’t believe that Mormonism is a divinely inspired church. But I am thinking of joining anyway, because I want to spend the rest of my life married to this wonderful person. What advice do you have for me? Here are answers that have been given by former Mormons on that list. Sometimes the questioner was a woman, in love with a Mormon man, sometimes a man in love with a Mormon woman.

The gender references, of course, reflect the gender of the original questioner. Love is a powerful thing. I think that you know deep in your heart whether or not you are seriously considering not joining the mormon church, or if you are definitely going to join because you love her. I’m hoping that the former is true, and that you are seriously trying to decide whether or not to join, irrespective of your passion for her.

In the Christian Bible, the Old Testament books are arranged so that this verse is the last verse in the Old Testament, emphasizing the Christian interpretation of this passage as a prophecy which is fulfilled in the gospels immediately following. In the Jewish arrangement of the scriptures, Malachi is the last of the minor prophets, and is followed by the books called “Writings”; thus it is nowhere near the end of the Hebrew scriptures. For more problems with this passage, see below.

The fame of Elijah rested not only on his great life and the Malachi prophecy, but on the fact that he did not die; he was carried into heaven without tasting death II Kings 2: It was perhaps this fact that allowed the Jews to accept the possibility that Elijah would, in fact, return as Malachi prophesied, since ordinarily the dead do not come back. Elijah, however, never having actually died, could return.

But ‘Elias’ occurs thirty times in the King James New Testament , and almost always in reference to the Malachi prophecy. John the Baptist was considered by many to be the returning Elijah. Notice however that it is always ‘Elias’ that is spoken of Matt At the Transfiguration, Moses and ‘Elias’ appear Matt Most modern translations of the New Testament use the Hebrew version of the name ‘Elijah’ instead of the Greek ‘Elias’ in order to avoid confusion and to emphasize that these two names refer to the same Old Testament prophet.

But Joseph Smith obviously did not know this, and apparently God didn’t tell him:

How to Manage Mormon Missionaries

Everyone knows what Mormon missionaries look like: Mormon missionaries are always trying to get you to take a copy of The Book of Mormon and to tell you about their crazy cult, right? They just want to get you baptized so you count toward their points to heaven.

Let me start by saying this is nothing more than a humorous look at what it’s like to date Mormon girls from a non-Mormon guy’s living in a Mormon-world perspective.

Background[ edit ] Shortly after what Mormons consider to be the restoration of the gospel, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in , Joseph Smith revealed that the Second Coming of Christ was near, that the City of Zion would be near the town of Independence in Jackson County, Missouri , and that his followers were destined to inherit the land held by the current settlers.

If ye are faithful, ye shall assemble yourselves together to rejoice upon the land of Missouri, which is the land of your inheritance, which is now the land of your enemies. Tensions built up between the rapidly growing Mormon community and the earlier settlers for a number of reasons: They believed—after a revelation recorded on June 6, —that if they were righteous they would inherit the land held by others “which is now the land of your enemies” in Missouri.

Where there was a critical mass of Mormons in the community, they were frequently viewed as having sold the election to the highest bidder, although there is no recorded proof of this ever taking place. Lilburn Boggs, as a Jackson county resident, and as Lieutenant Governor, was in a position to observe and assist in executing the tactics described by one Mormon historian:

Married Hi Nathaniel, That is a tough place to be! I sadly concur with your assessment of the L. Church, and have had reaching it to Mormons on my heart for quiet a while. It’s a hefty copy, but if your in college you may appreciate that size of book. I recommend it because of a table it has that is simply a rundown of the differences between Mormonism and Christianity.

The demand for decent, marriageable Mormon men is so strong that I can see how Mormon women might see LDS guys dating outside the fold as a betrayal of sorts. But now that I’m much older I’m less stereotypically Mormon than I was as that year old RM I was when I got married.

She told me she was not going to listen to her mind and what she was taught to believe; that she, instead, was going to listen to her heart. Recently she told me we should just be friends before she hurts me. I know this is not what she really wants. She has said her dream has always been to marry in the temple and to live on eternally. Obviously she cannot fulfill her dream if she stays with me, but I know she wants to be. I can see it in her eyes and could hear it in the affliction of her voice when she stated she just wanted to be friends.

I make her truly happy; she has said she has never felt happier and neither have I. I think she is really saying that because she is afraid and confused. What do you think? Ray Ray, Ad Members of the church are free to marry whomever they choose. However, Temple marriages or Sealings are only available to members who are faithful to the standards of the church. The young woman you love so much has made a decision in her life to reach for a temple marriage.

You take them off for only the obvious reasons like bathing and intimacy but put them right back on. Fully believe in and frequently reiterate that you know the Mormon church is true, the only true church which was formed by Joseph Smith after his claimed face to face visit with God. What can I do? Based on the experiences of other parents, and on my experience with the church, the church will gradually become a surrogate family for your son, and thus weaken your relationship with him. If he really gets involved in it and they will pressure him to become more “active” he will spend more and more time on church activities, associate more and more with his fellow Mormons, and have less and less to talk with you about, since you cannot possibly “understand” his new spirituality.

Ultimately he will be taught that his position in heaven will depend on whether he marries a good Mormon woman in the temple, and he will be pressured to do so. Since only good Mormons are allowed into the temple, you and all his non-Mormon family members and friends will not be invited to the wedding. Often the interest in Mormonism is a romantic friendship with a Mormon.

Law of chastity

May 13, at Jesus was answering this mockery of the resurrection more than he was teaching them about marriage. To the sealing power, which the LDS church understands to include eternal marriage, there is plenty of Biblical reference. For a few examples, Matthew Thirdly, teaching about the proper use of head coverings of the time, Paul in 1 Corinthians 11 mentions that in the Lord, man and women are one, neither without the other.

Apr 08,  · Best Answer: It’s strongly encouraged to date and marry other LDS members. Recently I read a study that stated that the divorce rate between two LDS people in the temple is about 8%. However, the divorce rate between one LDS member and one non-LDS individual is about 40%. The LDS church asks a lot of it’s Status: Resolved.

Are you sure you want to delete this answer? Yes Sorry, something has gone wrong. It’s strongly encouraged to date and marry other LDS members. The LDS church asks a lot of it’s members and it’s not hard to see why things can become a point of contention when one feels strongly about them. That said, who we date and marry is our choice. It’s not uncommon for families to be concerned if a family member is seriously dating someone who isn’t LDS.

We consider a temple marriage the “crowning ordinance” of the Temple. This is only possible if both are LDS and living their lives in a way that makes it so they can enter the temple. Frankly, the concerns are more or less the same if a family member is dating someone who is LDS, but unable or unwilling to get married in the Temple. I don’t know of anyone who sets out to get into a relationship where their intent is to convert the other person.
