The title was so bold that I felt like a great onus was on the author, Troy Parfitt, to convince readers of his controversial claim: I was able to ask a few questions of Troy Parfitt , a Canadian author and ten-year resident of Taiwan, which he took the time to answer in great detail. Some of the answers are controversial, and there are no punches held. Whether you agree or disagree, I would love to hear what you think in the comment section below. It would be nice to think Chiang and his Nationalists would have done what they finally did in Taiwan, i. Mao Zedong, in typical fashion, said the Nationalist Party was like a toilet that, no matter how many times flushed, still stank. The Nationalists were horrible.
Opinion: Hookup culture is ruining traditional dating
Rachel Ryan Writer Shutterstock In The Atlantic’s powerhouse September issue , Hannah Rosin explores the recent phenomenon of “Boys on the Side” — the hookup culture that has largely replaced dating on college campuses, crudely claiming that “feminist progress right now largely depends on the existence of the hookup culture.
Rosin showcases men stuck in a prolonged adolescence that knows no responsibility or consequence, because women — particularly successful women — argue that they alone, can buffer their lacking relationships with a successful career and do no more than roll eyes and accept the status quo. A status quo that women — contrary to Rosin — neither enjoy, nor hope persists. According to Rosin, there is “no retreating” to a time when men showed up on the doorstep with flowers, and no modern woman wants such a “retreat” anyway.
Sure, modern women would not want to catapult themselves back to the days free of jobs, birth control and a voice, but that does not, ipso facto, resign women to a brutish, independent alternative.

For real reform, we have to dig deeper. A hedonistic ethic pervades all our public institutions. Universities hold sex weeks where porn stars are speakers and sex toy companies display their wares. Be like porn stars. It should surprise no one that the hookup culture is metastasizing on campuses. The rules of the game are: Before reaching campus, students are primed by high school sex education courses that typically focus on the physical: These courses reduce the meaning of sex to a how-to manual.
Many students even say the programs make them feel pressured into having sex. In one study , teens reported that they felt more pressure from their sex education classes than from their girlfriends or boyfriends. Other segments of adult culture are complicit in sexualizing children at ever-younger ages. Emily Chang reports that the tech titans of Silicon Valley are self-congratulatory about their sexual experimentation, priding themselves on being bold and unconventional.

All the townspeople want to forgive him immediately, and they mock the titular priest for only being willing to give a measured forgiveness conditional on penance and self-reflection. They lecture the priest on the virtues of charity and compassion. Later, it comes out that the beloved nobleman did not in fact kill his good-for-nothing brother.
The good-for-nothing brother killed the beloved nobleman and stole his identity. Now the townspeople want to see him lynched or burned alive, and it is only the priest who — consistently — offers a measured forgiveness conditional on penance and self-reflection. The priest tells them: You forgive a conventional duel just as you forgive a conventional divorce. He further notes that this is why the townspeople can self-righteously consider themselves more compassionate and forgiving than he is.
Actual forgiveness, the kind the priest needs to cultivate to forgive evildoers, is really really hard. The fake forgiveness the townspeople use to forgive the people they like is really easy, so they get to boast not only of their forgiving nature, but of how much nicer they are than those mean old priests who find forgiveness difficult and want penance along with it.

To me, hookup culture is the practically the death throes of our society. If sex is so great, and drugs are so great, and both of them are so great, why do anything else? You’ll never be anything but unhappy if you choose to be a part of hookup culture.

This post was inspired by a debate with a friend of a friend on Facebook who has since become somewhat famous. Andrew Cord criticizes me for my bold and controversial suggestion that maybe people should try to tell slightly fewer blatant hurtful lies:
The thread is about hookup culture, the habit to consistenly engage in casual sex as a pattern. That’s largely shaped by societal norms. Furthermore,"sense of identity” isn’t static.

Whether you’re a player or new to casual hookups, use these tricks to stay safe and have fun when you’re looking for a random fling. Just Go With it Random hookups are, well, random – and that means that there can definitely be surprises in store for you and your partner. From knocking over kitchenware to embarrassing noises, random hookups can be tricky to navigate. Because, by definition, no one plans on having a random hookup, surprises can be right around the corner.
Roommates, pets, embarrassing living situations are just the tip of the iceberg. Use protection The most important part about any random hookup even if you know the person you happen to be hooking up with very well is to use protection. Without protection, that split second decision to have a random hookup could severely impact your future in unintended ways. Later down the road, if a casual relationship or romance develops, you and your partner can decide to use or not use protection at your discretion.
Remember though, for casual hookups, always use a condom. When two people sporadically engage in random sex, the intention is that there will be no strings attached – no expensive dates, no Facebook comments, and no bullshit. Of course, if another opportunity arises to hook up again with this special someone, you can begin spending the night and becoming more involved with each other. Chances are; you might find yourself hooking up with a complete stranger, or someone that you met online, in a bar, or even in a club.
It’s good not to speak negatively about anything. To avoid any embarrassing or awkward conversations make sure to keep things light, positive, and under no circumstances make any assumptions about your new partner.
