Model identification guide under construction iterary hundreds of different Vacumatic models exist. This Model Identification guide is in no way a complete recapitulation of all these models. Dating is rather simple, since most Vacs have a date code engraved on the body. You’ll find it to the right of the imprint: The first date codes emerged in , but lacking a date code doesn’t necessarily mean that the pen was made pre , since many imprints have been worn off.

Although Parker continued to produce double-jewel pens, those pens were the premier models in the “51” line, and they were made in far smaller numbers than the single-jewel version. Thus, the most common Vacumatic-filling “51”s today do not have the jeweled blind cap.

Parker 45 This pen was based upon an earlier design made by Eversharp, whose pen division Parker acquired in , and was released in as the Parker 45 in honour of the famous western revolver guns and as a reference to the fact that it could be loaded with cartridges as well as a squeezey ink converter. Aimed at the school pen market the new Parker 45 was simple to use and cheap to produce and became a great success, so much so that Parker realising that they were on to a winner began to produce more upmarket versions in metal known as Parker 45 Flighters which eventually led to a even more variations, colours and finishes.

The 45 was eventually discontinued in after an amazing production run that saw a huge number of varieties and colours produced, but all using the same shell, nib and ink system fitting making parts almost totally interchangeable between pens. For the collector the most easily recognisable part is the small triangular half hooded nib, available in gold, gold plate and steel, which can be unscrewed as a unit with the collar and ink feeder.

There are numerous Parker 45 copies, notably by Hero Pens China and Wilson Pens India so look for the “Parker” engraving on the cap and the ink converter as well as on the nib itself under the collar hood. Also be aware that there was a Parker model known as the Parker “New Slimfold” which was very similar in appearance although it had a screw on cap unlike the push on cap of the Parker

This pen is a quite brownish shade of burgundy. A burgundy 51 “Special” – The 51 “Special” was a less expensive model, with a steel nib, a highly polished mirror finish stainless cap, and its PliGlass reservoir only half shrouded in metal. These steel nibs are very well made, and though these are economy models, they are very good writers. The pen is shown with a style of rotary pencil which often accompanied a “Special” and which used the same mechanism as the 21 pencil.

The later models full size models were called Murex. These were two distinct pen lines, although related. Opening the box I was pleased to find out that the pen was indeed a Golden Falcon and better still it even had the plastic tag still attached to the clip and absolutely no sign of any use, not even when the nib was dipped in water to see if any ink would be released. The box itself is a bit scratched so it looks like it has done its job and protected the pen all these years. My best guess for age is that the pen dates from around which would be in line with the date on the standard Insignia version as well as being in line with other examples that I have seen.

It is possible that this is an early one that was manufactured before date coding prior to release in although I feel that this is unlikely. It is also quite possible that this one has been missed out accidentally or simply that the Golden Falcons were not marked due to their special production run. Most of the examples I have seen usually come with the Guarantee card stamped by one of the W H Smiths shops as well as a Certificate Of Insurance also stamped by the same company.

This one has the Guarantee card but no stamp on it to indicate where it came from or its date of sale. Parker 50 Golden Falcon Lattice Pattern The pen is marked as a medium although the nib looks quite large for a medium. Parker 50 Golden Falcon Nib The Parker 50 Falcon is a beautiful sleek design with its integrated nib and shell section grip that was based on the earlier Parker T1 design.

Metal nibs have their origins as far back as ancient Egypt and were made of metals like copper and bronze. However, the quality of writing that could be achieved with these pens was inferior to that of reed pens. Metallic nibs were made up through the 18th-century as one-off, craftsman-made luxury items [4] [5].

Sometimes, it’s really easy to nail a particular pen to a year. Sometimes, it’s not. Parker has made it very easy to date some of their pens. From the / introduction of the Vacumatic until the s, and again beginning in , Parker has imprinted date codes on its pens.

It seems to me that fountain pens are a very personal thing, and one person’s taste won’t always match that of another. Subject to that caveat, I have tried many pens, and the smoothest in my experience that are still reasonably affordable are: If you’re looking for something genuinely vintage, you can find Parker 51s on eBay all day for about bfifty US dollars or so.

Pens with a vacuumatic filler tend to be cheaper than the later aeromatic filler, though the aeromatics are easier to use and tend to be less likely to need an overhaul before they can be pressed into daily use. Most of my P51s are aerometrics from the 50s. Specifically the as opposed to the cheaper, not as good or series models. Mine is a beautiful writer, every bit as smoothe as my genuine 51s.
